Walk upon the water

Cities where rivers lie produce beautiful landscapes and provoke exclamations and sighs before prosaic but touching scenes, like the one that shows a couple holding hands while watching the sunset on the horizon. Other than inspire affection, they stimulate sensibility while observing and capturing the best feelings possible. They are, so to speak, a happy moment celebration.

At Porto Alegre, this scenes repeat themselves daily by the shore of its river, mostly now that a part of the shore is being revitalized. The beautiful living lounge is now with equipments and has a new name: Parque Urbano da Orla do Guaíba (Guaíba’s Shore’s Urban Park)

Imagine walking on metallic footbridges that go over the Guaíba river’s waters and watching the sunset sitting on benches over wood decks. And, after that, visiting the anchorage behind Usina do Gasômetro, dining at a floating restaurant that seems to sprout from the river. In addition: an access ramp takes the client to the gastronomic room, all made on glass.

The first step between Usina and Rótula das Cuias will transform strongly the
surroundings of the cultural centre. Who used to attend that space before the work was begun, mostly on holidays and weekends, to practice sports and to participate on cultural events or just gathering with friends and relaxing, will enjoy of a strong visual appealing structure that will make him/her come back several times.

Jaime Lerner’s humanistic vision is in perfect syntony with activities that aim the well-being of its public. As the architect of Municipal Bureau of Construction and Transportation, Oscar Eduardo Coelho once said, the project prioritizes the river’s contemplation, with public equipments for pedestrian use.

There will be pubs, volleyball and soccer courts, gymnastics equipment, changing rooms, rooms to bicycle storage, playground and buildings containing overlook, to avenue Beira-Rio’s level. One place that will turn a hotspot, especially to couples that enjoy a romantic dinner, will be the circle shaped restaurant that resembles a clock and is supported by columns settled on Guaíba river’s deep.

Other news that will get a lot of clicks to social media posts. The decks area with wood benches and metallic platforms will attract crowds with mobile phones to take selfies, with the sunset as background.

Besides the anchorage behind the power plant (Usina), the structure at the bedding of the avenue shall also call the visitors’ attention. The installation of 47 LED posts, inclined to Guaíba, will valorize details that would pass unnoticed if the illumination was in a different format and position.

The Urban Park will be embedded naturally to the selective list of obligatory sights, where there are already sights like the Estátua do Laçador, the Mercado Público and Casa de Cultura Mario Quintana, only quoting three examples

If the next stages repeat the esthetical accuracy of the first step, everyone will have new reasons to spread through the city that shelters architectural monuments like the Viaduct Otávio Rocha, on Borges de Medeiros Avenue, and Iberê Camargo Museum, on Padre Cacique Avenue.

The shore project foresees the revitalization of 5,9 kilometers between the Usina do Gasômetro and the Arroio Cavalhada, next to the Yacht Guaíba Club, on South Side.
